Recruitment solutions company Lula Way is breaking barriers in employment access with a nationwide initiative that leverages public libraries to create job opportunities for underserved communities. With a growing network of job centers and a recent partnership with the National Library of South Africa, Lula Way's "Libraries of Hope" project is a bold step toward addressing South Africa’s unemployment crisis.
The "Libraries of Hope" initiative brings job-seeking resources to 27 public libraries across Gauteng, with plans to expand to 300 libraries nationwide in the coming year. These job centers provide young job seekers with free access to the internet, Lula Way's job-matching platform, and personalized support, including screening, assessments, and profile creation.
“Libraries have always been beacons of access to knowledge,” says a representative from the National Library. “This partnership takes that access to the next level by connecting communities to employment opportunities.”
Gone are the days of job seekers carrying their CVs door-to-door, wasting time and money. Lula Way's centers are strategically placed in communities, offering a cost-effective, user-friendly way to match job seekers with potential employers.
“Walking around with a brown envelope from Sharpeville to Johannesburg is not only costly but demoralizing,” says Lula Way’s spokesperson. “Our centers make job applications accessible, convenient, and empowering.”
With 6.2 million young South Africans unemployed, innovative solutions like "Libraries of Hope" are critical. By collaborating with government and private sectors, Lula Way is helping to meet the employment goals outlined in the National Development Plan.
Lula Way goes beyond placement by ensuring long-term employment success. Every candidate undergoes a one-day induction to prepare them for workplace expectations, from behavior to dress code. This simple step has significantly improved job retention rates by 12-15%.
While government efforts alone cannot solve unemployment, partnerships like those with Lula Way are a testament to what’s possible. “We need all sectors to come together,” emphasizes a government official. “Initiatives like this make it easier for young people to access jobs and for employers to hire them.”
